CANEAT Publicity Video 2021

This was a project completed in May 2021, A Publicity Video for a upcoming App CANEAT.

There were some challenges, namely working around Covid19 restrictions, we had to plan the filming with social distancing in mind, always ensuring our masks are on, and ensuring a 1 metre social distancing when filming, and exercising extra caution as the filming took place just before the heighten alert.

Another challenge was that this was a no-profit project, as the client is a new start-up, cost is always a factor for any forms of marketing, and we at Lumiere Photography decided that a collaboration with CANEAT for a long term working relationship will be more beneficial than upright charging for one project.

Forging relationships with clients, and looking at a long term working relationship is what keeps a business sustainable in the long run. The founders of the app was very pleased with our final output and we managed to work on several upcoming projects and collaborations.

Yew Tee Primary School’s Publicity Video 2021

This project was for Yew Tee Primary School’s Publicity Video 2021, which was completed in May of 2021.

We had to plan the filming with social distancing in mind, always ensuring masks are on, and always maintaining a 1 metre social distancing when filming and exercising extra caution as it is a Primary school with plenty of children around as well as parents and teachers who are naturally worried about their children and students amid this pandemic.

Another obstacle was that we were working with young talents who may at times be uncomfortable in front of camera, as well as having a much shorter attention span. They do get frustrated at times, hence many retakes were needed, and we also had to work with the time limitations due to their schedule. A usual full day filming will consist of 8 – 10 hours but for the children we only have around 6 hours with them per full day shoot.

Our crew kept encouraging the talents, and changed the storyboard accordingly on site in order to complete the filming in time if the talents are unable to re-enact any particular scene. Sometimes rewards such as snacks, and rapport building with the children really helped, as seen in the behind the scenes images.

The client also required introduction of most CCA and classes to be fitted into a video that is less than 5 minutes, as well as including the concept of the young talent providing a tour of the school.

We had to be very creative with the transitions between the introductions of different classes/CCAs. This will allow shortening of the video length and made it much more interesting for the viewers. Working very closely with the clients also allows this project to be so successful.

We developed a close relationship with client, and thinking out of the box is what made projects like this a interesting and successful as seen in the final adaption of the video.

The client was pleased as it was a very unique take and something very different for a Primary School publicity video. As quoted by our client Ryan, ” It has been a wonderful partnership. Shao Wei and I would like to thank you for the tremendous support, advice and understanding along the journey.”

Pen Cai Social Media Project

This client contacted us on the last week of January 2021 and requested for a hero shot for their Chinese New Year Pen Cai promotion by 1st February 2021.

Firstly, we needed to manage their expectations with the tight deadline, and going through the details on what to include in the hero shot visual, item by item as well as getting into agreement with the client during this process.

Additionally, we needed to work around Covid19 restrictions. With the tight deadline, and the Covid19 restrictions, the client was unable to be on site with us during the physical shoot, so we sought approval on the arrangement of the dishes and props via a video live-stream so they can see and comment on the shoot in real-time.

Management of the expectations of clients, especially for projects with such tight deadlines is one of the most important aspects of contributing to project success. Adopting new technologies and thinking out of the box has become crucial in the Covid19 era.

Our client was delighted, being able to launch their promotion within their targeted deadline.

Project for Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School

This project was done for Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School to update their Marketing Collaterals for their new website. It was completed in February 2021, with photos and a 10 second teaser as deliverables.

One of our key obstacles was working around Covid19 restrictions, planning the photography shoot with social distancing in mind, always having to ensure masks are worn by all parties involved, and constantly maintaining at least 1 metre social distancing when filming, and exercising extra precaution as it is a Primary school with plenty of children moving around and having parents and teachers who were worried about their children amid the current pandemic.

Another obstacle we faced was that children 12 years and below were normally not used to being in front of a camera, especially with regards to proper posing. Young children have much shorter attention span, and they get frustrated at times, hence it was much harder to get the ideal shots, and we were also working with time limitations due to their schedule.

Our photographers overcame this challenge by constantly encouraging the children, joking with them, creating a more comfortable atmosphere and if the children were still unable to pose properly after that, we worked with the teachers to have other children as screen talents on standby.

We learnt that having a close working relationship with clients, experience and forecasting the problems that may be encountered can to prevent the shortcomings we anticipated.

The client benefitted by being able to meet the deadline set, and have all the marketing collaterals uploaded to their new website in time.

Baba Nasi Lemak

This was a project for a Home-Based-Business that was done in February 2021 for Baba Nasi Lemak. It was mainly to create a video to assist them in marketing their home cooked Nasi Lemak.

Our primary obstacle was that the business owners prefer to speak in Mandarin and our mandarin speaking ability is not as good. We can communicate in basic mandarin but specific phrases or catchphrases are hard for us to comprehend. So we discussed in advance with the owners to understand what they would like to communicate across to their customers and try to simplify it in basic Mandarin, so it will be easier for the mass public to understand when viewing the video. Doing so took up a lot more time than originally anticipated, but we managed to make the script work more effectively.

A second obstacle was that the client were inexperienced in front of the camera, the owner/chef being very camera shy and the usual 1-hour interview took us nearly 4 hours to shoot. Most importantly, we needed to be patient and kept encouraging him, even getting his family to give him moral support as well.

Lastly, we were not paid for this project. Given that we have to spend time to plan the storyboard like any other video production, editing and conducting the shoot on the weekend due to the owner’s schedule, all these were costs incurred on our end, but we decided to do it pro-bono as a part of our corporate social responsibility. We may not be able to donate large sums of money as we too are also largely affected by the Covid19 situation, but by helping others who may be more affected and assisting them to tide through these difficult times is something Lumiere can do. At the end of the day, we made more friends, and got to taste some great home based dishes.

Money is not everything,  and doing whatever little we can offer, goes a long way for others. The business owner managed to get much more sales for their nasi lemak as a result of the video and photography, and we are proud that we were part of that journey with them.

Cultural Medallion Young Artist Award

The Cultural Medallion Young Artist Award has been a project that we have had the great honour and pleasure of handling for the past 3 consecutive years of from 2018 to 2020.

The latest one was Completed in October 2020 and it was a Lifestyle Professional Portraiture.

There were multiple challenges that impeded our progress along the way, that we had to overcome or circumvent. Of which one of the primary challenges was that we were only given the location to conduct the shoot at the artist’s preferred venue only days before the shoot, and we have almost no time to plan ahead. Additionally, the photographer will have to adept based on the location as well as the artist’s preference if any. Some venues chosen include the artist’s home, and being discrete and not revealing the location in the images is also very important. The experience level and communication skills of the photographer plays a very important role.

Another obstacle were the artists’ busy schedules, and working around that to complete the shoots efficiently and professionally. The winners are all usually very busy with tight schedules, and we have to ensure that we could complete the shoot professionally and efficiently within the given time. We would always have a short chat upon arriving, to understand the artist’s preferences in terms of how they want to be represented in images, as well as their medium of work. With the information that we gathered, we will try to showcase in the artist’s works in the portraits as well. Being able to adept and understand the end-user’s preference and requirements in a short notice is a necessary skillset.

Thus far we have always managed to meet the deadlines, and have managed to produce works that were representational of the artists and their styles and requirements.

Woodlands Primary School Video 2020

This was a project for Woodlands Primary School, for their Year End Video for 2020. It was completed in December 2020.

It was a challenge to work around Covid19 restrictions, planning the video shoots with social distancing in mind, always ensuring our masks are on, and constantly maintaining a 1 metre distance when filming, and exercising extra caution as it is a Primary school and there were plenty of children around. Parents and teachers were duly concerned about their children amid this pandemic.

Our second obstacle was that our key interviewees were children below the age of 12, who were not used to being in front of a camera, and it was especially trying when they had to read scripts which were multiple pages long. The young children had much shorter attention spans compared to our usual interviewees, and at times some interviews took almost 2 hours to complete.

The videographer overcame this obstacle by constantly encouraging the children, and joking with them to create a more comfortable atmosphere. If the children were still unable speak, or recall what they had in mind to say, we utilised a teleprompter for them to read from.

One other major obstacle was that we had to create and stitch together a video that was almost 50 minutes long, and more than half of the video footage was not taken by us. In terms of specifications, the video quality was inconsistent. Creating a video that would flow nicely is very hard, especially when the video is long.

To overcoming this obstacle, the editor planned the flow of the video by consulting the client, recommending styles of video direction and music choices prior filming. During the shoot, we filmed additional footages or backups to bridge the footage between what was received from the client and our own footages.

We learnt that a close working relationship with clients, and forecasting the problems that may be encountered was essential for overcoming the roadblocks anticipated.

The client was pleased that we were able to meet the deadline to have the video ready, amid all the obstacles and they could showcase the video to all students and their parents in time before the end of 2020.

Pokka Video Project

This was a special project that we did for Pokka Singapore from November to December 2020. It was a video production for their Long Service Award, having completed the entire process from conceptualization, all the way to final post-production and handover of the final video to the client within a month.

There were several challenges that we had to overcome during the process of doing the project, primarily learning and planning to work around the ever-changing Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, as set by governmental regulations.

We overcame this first obstacle by planning the video shoots with social distancing in mind, always ensuring that our masks are on, and maintaining a minimum social distancing space of 1 meter for everyone involved. This adds to the job scope for the video producer on the ground, who normally already has his hands full with ensuring that we are abiding by the usual laws, rules and regulations such as privacy releases, site permits as well as handling and mitigating other unplanned operational issues.

There was another key obstacle that we encountered. The interviewees are not used to being in front of a camera, and are very shy, taking a lot of effort to muster the courage to  speak naturally in front of the camera lens.

We overcame this obstacle by having the Project Producer and Chief Videographer constantly encourage interviewees, and making them feel more comfortable by joking with them and getting more familiar with each other, attempting to coax them into a more relaxed frame of mind.

We also utilized a teleprompter as a backup to assist them with their key speaking points, when they have a mental block while speaking, unable to continue with their original answers, as well as insert in words to help guide them along.

This was an interesting learning experience for us. With enough planning, preparation and working closely with the client, we were able to maneuver around the tight Covid-19 governmental regulated restrictions and obstacles, and in turn we were able to meet the tight deadline and produce the video in time for them to showcase to their award winners.

The client was pretty relieved too, as they were also concerned that the restrictions that arose from the Covid-19 restrictions would impede the project from getting completed on time. They were pleased with the end result and we are happy that we did not fail their expectations.
